Cambridge Analytica is shutting down

After the far-reaching scandal over mishandled Facebook user data, Cambridge Analytica is shutting down.

The news was reported earlier by The Wall Street Journal. The company soon said in a press release that the affiliated United Kingdom-based company SCL Elections has filed for insolvency, and that bankruptcy proceedings will begin soon for Cambridge Analytica as well. The data analytics company’s United Kingdom-based parent organization, SCL Group, will also be shuttered, according to the Journal.
Cambridge Analytica, which gained fame by working on data analytics for the Trump presidential campaign, was engulfed by controversy after reports that it obtained data on millions of Facebook users through a seemingly innocuous personality test app. The revelation has triggered government hearings in both the United Kingdom and the United States and forced Mark Zuckerberg to testify before Congress. Cambridge Analytica’s CEO, Alexander Nix, resigned after further reporting showed him discussing the possibility of entrapping politicians for clients.
The overwhelmingly bad press generated by the news cycle appears to have been too much for the company. In today’s statement, it said, “The siege of media coverage has driven away virtually all of the Company’s customers and suppliers.”
In its statement, the company continued to defend itself in the face of controversy and said an internal investigation did not substantiate wrongdoing. “Over the past several months, Cambridge Analytica has been the subject of numerous unfounded accusations and, despite the Company’s efforts to correct the record, has been vilified for activities that are not only legal, but also widely accepted as a standard component of online advertising in both the political and commercial arenas,” the statement said.

OnePlus 6 Price in India Leaked, Said to Start at Rs. 36,999

OnePlus 6 Compared With iPhone X in New Hands-On Leaked Photos

HIGHLIGHTS

  • OnePlus 6 display similar to that of iPhone X
  • The smartphone is set to launch on May 17
  • It will be powered by the Snapdragon 845 processor
OnePlus is all set to launch its newest flagship on May 17 in India (and May 16 in London). Running up to the launch, the OnePlus 6 has been leaked extensively and it is expected to be powered by a Snapdragon 845 SoC, sport a bezel-less display, and come with a dual camera setup. New hands-on images have now surfaced on the Web, and it shows the OnePlus 6 with the display switched on, and has also been compared with the iPhone X.
The OnePlus 6 is seen sporting a bezel-less display, something that the company confirmed when it announced it would embrace the notch. These photos, shared by Techtastic from Chinese social media site Baidu, compare the OnePlus 6 with the iPhone X. The smartphone is visibly larger than the iPhone X, but the display is uncannily similar. The notch at the top of the display houses the sensors, just like the Apple variant, but it's less wide. There's little clarity on how the extra real estate will be utilised on the Android device, but the company will demo that presumably at the event.

If rumours are to be believed, the OnePlus 6 will come with a 19:9 display, which is rumoured to come in 6.28-inch size and features full-HD+ (1080x2160 pixels) resolution. The smartphone will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, coupled with 8GB of RAM. It is also rumoured to have a vertically placed dual rear camera setup, rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, a 3450mAh battery, and could run a new version of OxygenOS with Android 8.1 Oreo on top. Furthermore, OnePlus has partnered with Marvel Studios to launch a OnePlus 6 x Marvel Avengers Limited Edition variant.
Some past rumours claimed that the OnePlus 6 will go on sale in the country with a starting price of Rs. 36,999 for the 64GB storage variant, while its 128GB variant will be available at Rs. 39,999. The smartphone will also come with a 256GB storage option, though its price is yet to be revealed.
OnePlus will host pop-up events across eight Indian cities between May 21 and May 22 to let fans experience and purchase the new flagship before its general open sales that will take place in the country exclusively via Amazon India. The OnePlus smartphone will notably be available for purchase through the pop-up stores on the first-come-first-serve basis and similar events will be held on the same schedule in the New York, London, Paris, Milan, and Beijing for global OnePlus fans.

How Nirav Modi fraud spoiled Narendra Modi’s big plan: Here’s what Fitch has to say

narendra-modi-pti

The Rs 13,000 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud allegedly by diamond czar Nirav Modi has likely spoiled this ambitious plan by Narendra Modi, coupled with higher recognition of NPAs.

Nirav Modi fraud has likely spoiled bank recap plan by Narendra Modi, coupled with higher recognition of NPAs.

Last October, the Narendra Modi government announced the big bang bank recapitalisation of Rs 2.11 lakh crore to support the banking system in the country. The bank recapitalisation plan was in addition to the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) to fix bad loans. The aim was to clean Public Sector Banks’ books and revive slow investments in the economy. But, the Rs 13,000 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud allegedly by diamond czar Nirav Modi has likely spoiled the ambitious bank recapitalisation plan, coupled with higher recognition of NPAs.
Fitch Ratings, in its latest report, said that the Rs 2.11 lakh crore bank recapitalisation plan, which is 1.2% of the GDP, may not be enough, especially after the PNB fraud. “These banks are likely to need additional government capital, however, in particular after a recent high-profile fraud case involving USD2.2 billion in Punjab National Bank.
It also added that most of the capital injection is “likely to be absorbed by losses associated with NPL (IBC) resolution, rather than to fund new lending”. It may be recalled that the Rs 13,000 PNB fraud was uncovered just days after the government announced Rs 5,473 crore capital infusion for the bank as part of its Rs 2.11 lakh crore bank recap plan. Moreover, the fraud amount is more than double the government announced to infuse in the bank.
In February, Fitch Ratings had put PNB on ‘Rating Watch Negative’ with Viability Rating of BB’, following the fraud. The Rating Watch Negative reflects the possibility of a downgrade of PNB’s Viability Rating. Fitch had said that the massive fraud has had a capital market impact and has been a misfortune for the reputation of India’s second-largest PSU bank PNB.
Fitch, once again, refused to upgrade India’s sovereign rating for the 12th time, despite favourable economic growth outlook. It raised concerns over weak fiscal balances, the Achilles’ heel in India’s credit profile.

Soon, Use Broadband to Call Landline, Mobile Numbers

63993004

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Soon you'll be able to latch on to your home or office wi-fi broadband to make calls to mobile phones as well as landlines
  • Telecom operators, and other companies who obtain a telephony licence, will be able to offer you a new mobile number that will not require a SIM
NEW DELHI, Stuck in a bad signal area, or getting the dreaded sign that there is no mobile network at all? Soon you'll be able to latch on to your home or office wi-fi broadband to make calls to mobile phones as well as landlines, with the government on Tuesday approving a proposal to allow internet telephony in the country.

Telecom operators, and other companies who obtain a telephony licence, will be able to offer you a new mobile number that will not require a SIM, but can be activated by downloading an internet telephony app . Regulator Trai had recommended the proposal last October, with the aim of giving new connectivity options to consumers plagued by call drops.
The inter-ministerial Telecom Commission approved the proposal, which will now enable the rollout of internet telephony services by companies such as Reliance Jio, BSNL, Airtel and other operators. Arvind Kumar, advisor at Trai, said the measure would benefit consumers by offering new connectivity choices. “This will give more options to consumers, especially in areas where quality of service is an issue. These include places such as buildings and even homes where conventional telecom signals are weak while wi-fi availability is strong.”
Explaining the process, an official said that to avail internet telephony, a consumer would need to download the app that an operator may offer. “Following this, one will get a 10-digit number which is like any other mobile telephone number. For example, you may be using an Airtel SIM for your existing telecom needs, but may later download a Jio internet telephony app for which you will get a new and different number. This app can be used to make calls using broadband.”
However, in case you download the app of the same service provider that you are currently using, then you can have the same number, an official said. Regulator Trai has pitched internet calling as a cost-effective alternative for making voice calls. “This will increase the call success rate, particularly in poor coverage areas where public internet may be available but signal of a particular telecom company is not available,” it said
